Emails sent to one user via an Exchange hybrid server to Office 365 bounce back with a Non-Delivery Report (NDR) error message "Remote Server returned 550 5.4.1 Recipient address rejected: Access denied".
550 5.4.1 recipient@domain.com: Recipient address rejected: (Access Denied)
Received this failure response after emailing to an address I have successfully mailed to prior to moving to Office 365. I'm not sure if the address was rejected at the recipient's domain, or if Office 365 doesn't like the recipient's address and refused to send to it. Names and email addresses removed for privacy.

Most people use the anti-spam feature to bar unnecessary emails from their inboxes. But, sometimes, this feature cannot differentiate between genuine and unnecessary emails. So, you might find some external messages redirected to spam. When your recipient has the spam rulebook for their inbox, you are likely to receive the recipient address rejected notification.
To successfully solve this issue, you first need to answer these questions: Are you getting these error codes when sending emails to any recipient? Have you sent emails to the recipient successfully before? If the error codes come up when sending emails to any destination, then the problem is not in a typo but may be in the DNS configurations. Here are a few tips to help you fix recipient address rejected issues:

A 5xx error indicates a permanent failure. This error means there is a problem with the message content, formatting, or recipients that prevents delivery. These issues must be addressed before delivery can be re-attempted by resending the message. In most cases, the message contained in the SMTP response will indicate the specific problem with the message. An example of a permanent failure is a message sent to a recipient that does not exist.
Often you'll just see the email address in the report in different places, but you can also keep an eye out for Final-Recipient, Original-Rcpt-To, or Delivery to the following recipients or groups failed as places where you'll see the email address listed.
Solution: Check with the recipient through the different channel and ask them whether the emails address will be active again. Remove the email from the contact list if email id doesn't exist anymore or else move to the other contact list which you will be sending again after some time.
Solution: These errors are unclear since the message or error are strange. Starts with checking email addresses syntax. Wait for a few minutes try sending email again. If still, the email is through errors try to contact recipient through alternative mediums and confirm their email address.
Solution: Try to resend the email by checking the recipient's email address and make sure it is correct. If the problem still arises, contact your recipient and ask for an alternative.
