Literary Analysis of In Another Country by Ernest Hemingway: The Characterization of the Narrator an

In their present "country" there is much dead game hanging outside the shops. The wind is blowing the dead birds, and the snow is falling on the furs of the foxes. There are many ways to go to the hospital. The ways alongside the canals are long, but when they walk along the short way the civilians hate them. Sometimes the officers go to the Cafe Cova. When he remembers the patriotism of the cafe girls the speaker's tone of voice becomes bitter. These girls do not know the horror of the war sitting inside the rich and warm rooms. That is why they idealize patriotism. But the soldiers frequently want to go the cafe to see the girls. The narrator is not a true "hawk" like his companions. He got the medal because he was an American and because he was wounded. But being wounded in war is really an accident. The narrator is afraid to die, so he can never do any brave action as shown by the other three soldiers. But, when his companions know this, their attitude toward him changes. The narrator likes another boy who was wounded without showing his bravery. The major also goes to the hospital. He is attempting to live in a realistic "country". He is interested in the speaker's grammar. He does not believe in bravery in spite of being a great fencer. He uses the machine dutifully although he knows that the machine will not improve his hand. He married a young girl after he retired from the active service through the wound. But the girl dies of pneumonia. This event shocked the major. Therefore, he advises the speaker not to marry. If he marries, he will lose his wife. But if he does not marry, he will lose nothing. The memory of his wife's death troubles the major and he does not come to the hospital for three days. When he comes, he does not pay any attention to the three photographs of hands like his that were completely restored.

Literary Analysis Of In Another Country By Ernest Hemingway

The title of the story is interesting. At first glance, "In Another Country," refers to the fact that the American narrator is indeed in a foreign land--Italy. Yet he is also a visitor to another realm--the "country" of the sick and injured. And maybe World War I is the ultimate other country--a setting that defines nations or destroys them and has the potential to erase people, ideology, and the future. Does the doctor featured in the story truly believe that his patients will recover from their injuries or is he merely accustomed to dispensing hope in much the same way he might dole out aspirin? The likelihood that the machines will heal the soldiers is debatable. Do these gadgets prefigure modern technology or are they another reminder of how dependent upon machines both war and medicine really are?

Hemingway returned home early in 1919 to a time of readjustment. Before the age of 20, he had gained from the war a maturity that was at odds with living at home without a job and with the need for recuperation.[20] As Reynolds explains, "Hemingway could not really tell his parents what he thought when he saw his bloody knee." He was not able to tell them how scared he had been "in another country with surgeons who could not tell him in English if his leg was coming off or not."[21]

The New York Times wrote in 1926 of Hemingway's first novel, "No amount of analysis can convey the quality of The Sun Also Rises. It is a truly gripping story, told in a lean, hard, athletic narrative prose that puts more literary English to shame."[171] The Sun Also Rises is written in the spare, tight prose that made Hemingway famous, and, according to James Nagel, "changed the nature of American writing".[172] In 1954, when Hemingway was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, it was for "his mastery of the art of narrative, most recently demonstrated in The Old Man and the Sea, and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style."[173]

For author Gordimer, what is remarkable about the novel (which she describes as a cult book for her generation) is that Jordan takes up arms in another country's civil war for personal, not ideological, reasons. In the novel, Hemingway suggests that Jordan has no politics. Instead, his dedication to the Republic is fueled, in Gordimer's words, by a "kind of conservative individualism that collides in self-satisfaction with the claims of the wider concern for humanity." Jordan dedicates himself to a cause and is willing to risk his own life for it. 2ff7e9595c
